Coles Cleaning and Trolley Collection: Duties and Application Preparation

In short

  • Coles presents cleaning and trolley collection as its own team, called Coles Services, and advertises these jobs on its careers site.
  • The work is cleaning store areas and bringing trolleys back from the car park, much of it on your feet and outdoors.
  • It is a separate job from checkout work, with its own job category on Coles’ site.
  • Coles says applicants for Coles Services generally need to be at least 16.
  • OzWorkly is independent and doesn’t recruit for Coles.

Who employs Coles cleaners and trolley collectors?

Here is what Coles says about who employs you.

What Coles says (Cleaning and Trolley Collection page, checked 15 October 2026): “Join the Coles Services team and help maintain the high standards of our stores. As part of one of Australia’s largest cleaning and trolley collection teams, you’ll ensure a clean and safe shopping experience for our customers.”

On 15 October 2026, Coles’ Search and apply page had a Cleaning and Trolley Collection job category, separate from Store Team Member, and its listings were under the Coles Supermarkets brand. None of the Coles careers pages we checked mention contractors for this work.

Our tip: if you see a cleaning or trolley job at a Coles store advertised by another business, the employer is that business, not Coles. Coles’ process and benefits described here may not apply, so ask that employer directly about pay, hours and who you’d report to.

What does the job involve?

What Coles says (Store Teams page): the role “keeps our stores clean, safe and welcoming for everyone”. In the Day in the Life video on the Cleaning and Trolley Collection page, a team leader says “The store floor is clean and safe for all team members and our customers every single day”, and calls the job “a free gym workout!”

Coles’ pages don’t give a list of duties, so here is what the two halves of the job usually involve. This is our general description. Check the ad for the store you want.

Cleaning

Keeping floors, entrances and amenities clean through the day, and cleaning up spills quickly so nobody slips. A spill is a safety job before it’s a cleaning job: you mark it off, then clean it.

Trolley collection

Bringing trolleys back from the car park and trolley bays, so there are always enough at the entrance. You push lines of trolleys through moving traffic, so you need to watch drivers and pedestrians the whole time. In the same video, a Coles Services In Charge says: “I see a full bay at the end of the day”.

When we looked on 15 October 2026, some listings were titled Vehicle Trolley Collection. Coles’ general pages don’t explain what that role involves, so if you apply for one, ask if you’d drive a vehicle and what licence you’d need.

Our tip: this work isn’t the same as being on the registers. If you want customer service shifts later, say so once you’re in. In Coles’ store video, a team member, Nick, says they “started out pushing trolleys” and then moved into service.

What conditions should you check?

Coles’ general pages don’t give shift times, hours or pay for this role. Read the full ad and ask before you accept.

  • What time do shifts start and finish at this store?
  • How much of the shift is outdoors, and what wet-weather and sun gear is provided?
  • Which cleaning products and equipment will I use, and what training comes first?
  • Is the role casual or part-time?
  • For a vehicle trolley role, do I drive, and which licence do I need?

What Coles says (Rewards and Benefits page, checked 15 October 2026): “We provide uniforms and safety footwear at no cost for eligible team members”. The page doesn’t say who counts as eligible, so ask.

Our tip: much of this job is outdoors. Bring water, a hat and a jumper until you know what’s supplied.

How do you apply?

What Coles says (Cleaning and Trolley Collection page, checked 15 October 2026): step 1 is “Search and apply for suitable roles, or if there are no jobs in your area complete our Expression of Interest.”

Unlike the Store Team Member page, this first step doesn’t mention the online assessment. If you’re asked to do one, follow the link in your email. The later steps (walkaround interview, working rights check, onboarding and first day) match the store process set out in our guide to working at Coles.

Who can apply

What Coles says (FAQ page, checked 15 October 2026): “for Coles Services, you will generally need to be at least 16 years of age to apply for employment.”

The other rules, such as working rights, are the same as for any Coles job.

The walkaround interview

The interview is held at the store with the manager and a small group. Wear clothes you can walk around a car park in: neat, but with closed shoes. It’s a good chance to see the trolley bays and ask how the team splits cleaning and trolley work.

What does Coles look for, and how can you show it?

What Coles says: the Store Teams page asks for “attention to detail and care for customers”. Coles’ My First Job page lists “A safety-focused approach”, described as “speaking up if something’s not right”, and “Reliability and trustworthiness”.

Example answer (ours, about safety): “At the footy club I set up the canteen each Saturday. One week the floor near the urn was wet. I put a chair over it, mopped it and told the canteen manager so we could fix the leak.”

Example answer (ours, about reliability): “I did a paper round for two years. I never missed a morning, and when I was sick I found someone to cover and showed them the route.”

Is there a path up?

In the Coles Services video, Jo says they moved up to “Services in Charge”, and Lauren, a team leader, runs three stores and manages the rosters. On 15 October 2026, Coles’ Search and apply page also listed Coles Services team leader jobs. So the role can lead somewhere, if you show you’re reliable.

  • Your weekly availability, including weekends.
  • An email address only you use, and a phone you answer.
  • Two short examples: one about safety and one about turning up.
  • Closed shoes and neat clothes for the walkaround.
  • Your ID and working rights documents, ready for when Coles asks.
  • If you’re under 18, a parent or guardian ready to give written permission if Coles asks for it.
